Slumping White Sox go back to the well for Alomar

PHOENIX - Angered with Chicago's inconsistency and refusing to concede the division title, White Sox general manager Ken Williams is again looking to Roberto Alomar for help.

The White Sox acquired Alomar from Arizona on Thursday, the second straight year Williams has traded for the 12-time All-Star second baseman for the stretch run. The White Sox gave the Diamondbacks a player to be named and cash.

Alomar, 36, batted .309 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 39 games for Arizona.

SORRY, ROGER: Roger Clemens was given an emphatic apology Thursday for "unjustly" being ejected from his 10-year-old son's baseball game Saturday in Craig, Colo.

David King, president of tournament organizer Triple Crown Sports, said, "Mr. Clemens was a nonaggressor and a victim of mistaken identity and confusion" by an upset umpire.

Clemens was asked to leave son Kacy's game in when a 22-year-old ump said the Astros pitcher spit a sunflower seed at him.

THE RIGHT CHOICE: Luis Gonzalez decided to have surgery when he realized the pain in his right elbow was affecting his hitting as well as his throws. The Diamondbacks slugger and Jefferson High product, who bats left-handed, noticed about a month ago he was having trouble pulling the ball.

CUBAN STAR A FREE AGENT: Cuban slugger Kendry Morales obtained residency in the Dominican Republic, making him eligible to negotiate a free-agent contract in the majors. Morales, listed at 21, is a switch-hitting outfielder/first baseman.

ASTROS: Left-hander Darren Oliver left his start after one inning with tightness in his pitching shoulder. He is day to day.

DODGERS: Right-hander Hideo Nomo, out since July 1 with rotator cuff inflammation, is likely to head to the bullpen when he returns.

PHILLIES: Right-hander Kevin Millwood left his start after two innings with swelling in his pitching elbow . ... Leftfielder Pat Burrell went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left wrist.

REDS: Longtime broadcaster Joe Nuxhall says the team is forcing him out of the booth. The team said in a statement it has talked with Nuxhall about returning, but not as an everyday broadcaster.
