Hejduk gets $5.7-million award from arbitration

Colorado forward Milan Hejduk was awarded a $5.7-million contract for next season in arbitration. The 28-year-old Hejduk had 35 goals and 40 assists in 82 games with the Avalanche last season, and earned $3.2-million. Hejduk, the 87th overall pick of the 1994 entry draft, has 197 goals and 219 assists in 470 career NHL games. He also has 28 goals and 33 assists in 90 career playoff games.

MORE NHL: Forward Jason Wiemer, who played for Calgary from 1997-01, returned. Terms were not disclosed. Wiemer, who played for the Lightning from 1994-98 after being taken eighth overall in 1994, had eight goals, 14 assists and 130 penalty minutes with the Islanders and Wild last season. ... Center Matt Cullen signed a one-year deal with the Hurricanes. In 56 games with Florida last season, he had six goals and 13 assists. Cullen became a free agent when the Panthers did not make a qualifying offer. ... Maple Leafs defenseman Bryan McCabe and center Nik Antropov re-signed. Two days before his arbitration hearing, McCabe agreed to a $9-million, two-year deal. Terms of Antropov's contract were not disclosed. ... The Sharks' Nils Ekman , a former Lightning wing, was awarded a $1.2-million contract for next season by an arbitrator.

Defending champion Andy Roddick overwhelmed 15th-seeded Paradorn Srichaphan 6-2, 6-3 in 53 minutes and reached the Cincinnati Masters quarterfinals in Mason, Ohio. Other third-round winners included 2002 champion Carlos Moya, former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt and Marat Safin.

ROGERS CUP: Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova was eliminated, losing 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to Vera Zvonareva. Former champions Amelie Mauresmo and Jennifer Capriati advanced to today's quarterfinals in Montreal along with French Open champion Anastasia Myskina, who defeated Chanda Rubin 6-4, 6-0. Fifth-seeded Capriati ousted Mary Pierce 6-2, 6-4.

COACH SENTENCED: A former coach of Mark Philippoussis and Monica Seles was imprisoned for 31/2 years for sexually abusing a female student at a Melbourne, Australia school 20 years ago. Gavin Maxwell Hopper, 48, was convicted this week of three counts of indecent assault and six of gross indecency.

ARENA FOOTBALL: Arizona hired Todd Shell as coach, replacing former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Danny White, who was fired two weeks ago.

HORSES: Leading driver Ron Pierce swept both major stakes at the Meadowlands, winning the $420,000 Peter Haughton Memorial with New York Yank and the $450,620 Merrie Annabelle with Reinvent.

SOCCER: San Jose forward Landon Donovan was suspended for a game and fined $1,000 by Major League Soccer for making an obscene gesture at an official after a July 24 draw with New England.

SAILING: Spanish team El Reto will compete at the 2007 America's Cup in Valencia, Spain, after organizers approved a $1.2-million guarantee.
