In addition, the students had time to prepare for competition, make friends and exchange state pins with students from throughout the United States, vote for officers and visit many local cultural and historic sites.

WHAT'S HAPPENING Commissioners designate Family Day

The Pasco County Commission wants you to eat dinner with your kids. So much so that commissioners approved a resolution on July 13 designating Sept. 27 as Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children.

The resolution came after attention was drawn to a survey about the use of illegal drugs and the abuse of alcohol and nicotine as constituting the greatest threats to the well-being of America's children. Surveys by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University have consistently found that the more often children and teenagers eat dinner with their families the less likely they are to smoke, drink and use illegal drugs.

The survey also found that teenagers who rarely eat dinner with their families are 72 percent more likely than the average teenager to use illegal drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.

Sheriff's Office sponsors camp

The moss-draped trees and well-manicured fields of Stanley Park in Lacoochee provided a green backdrop recently for about 40 children who participated in Harmony in the Streets, a free five-day camp sponsored by the Pasco County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches. Sheriff Bob White paid the organization $5,000 to bring the program to Pasco for the first time. Youth Ranches has been running the camps, which travel around the state in one week spurts, since 1997. All week, the children, most of whom live in the Lacoochee area, munched on picnic lunches provided by the Boys and Girls Club of Lacoochee, played a variety of sports and games, learned about the environment and worked together to improve their social and citizenship skills. They watched demonstrations delivered by members of the sheriff's aviation, marine, canine, SWAT and mounted units. "We're going to try to make this an annual thing," said Cpl. Chad Tadlock, who rounded up the campers by giving out applications to parents.
