Oh, baby, for Joe and Meagan

By RICK STROUD
Published August 10, 2004

LAKE BUENA VISTA - Joe Jurevicius was back at the hospital and this time the Bucs receiver didn't want to leave. Jurevicius' wife, Meagan, gave birth to a girl, Caroline Elizabeth, on Monday in Tampa. The vital statistics: 9 pounds, 1 ounce and 213/4 inches.

"Meagan is healthy, she had a daughter and everything is great," coach Jon Gruden said. Jurevicius' first child, William Michael, died 17 months ago at 9 weeks old from a rare neurodegenerative disease called fetal sialidosis.

William Michael's battle became a national story because he was born in the midst of the Bucs' run to a Super Bowl title.

Drawing inspiration from his son's strength, Joe made several critical receptions in the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl XXXVII. Jurevicius, who has undergone surgeries on his knee and back in the past nine months, is expected to rejoin the team this week.

"Joe Jurevicius has had a lot happen to him in the last year, emotionally, mentally, physically and we've got to be there for him now and just help him through this rehab," Gruden said.

"In the time being, it's just great to enjoy the birth of your child, and we're really excited for him. Hopefully, he brings us all cigars."
