Young folks capture the good in own back yards

ST. PETERSBURG - About a dozen preteens and early teens are scouting several county neighborhoods, taking photographs of the things they are proud of there.

The Pinellas Opportunity Council is sponsoring the effort, called "I Like My Neighborhood."

Youngsters are making images in Wildwood and Childs Park in St. Petersburg, Pinellas Village in Largo, North Greenwood and High Point in Clearwater, and Union Academy in Tarpon Springs.

The POC project is one of several such endeavors that are taking place in St. Petersburg or have already finished. Most recently, the city government announced its "Feet on the Street" project to document Midtown neighborhoods.

The goal is to give the youngsters an opportunity to focus on positive things in their neighborhoods and lives.

Pinellas County Youth Art Corps, based at the Wildwood Recreation Center, will develop and frame photos.

Mentors for the project are Dan Weisberg in Childs Park and Carol Davis in Wildwood.

The last images will be snapped Sunday.

Twenty-four representative photographs will be selected for display. The first exhibition will open at the Arts Center in St. Petersburg on Sept. 10. The second will be part of St. Petersburg's First Night celebration on New Year's Eve, and the third opens Jan. 16 at the Gulf Coast Museum of Art in Largo.
