Editor: We find it laughable to read the recent articles about the so-called Tourist Development Council bureaucracy - typical government waste.
In 1995, we heard of this area while vacationing in Key West. Getting close to retirement, we called the Hernando County Chamber of Commerce requesting information and maps, etc. Weeks later we called again and asked why they didn't respond. The response was, "We're out of stamps this month." They declined our offer to send them some stamps.
Some time later, a couple of Realtors did send us maps and brochures. Thanks to them and free enterprise, we are now happy residents.

Self-service, then no service
Re: Wake up and save your jobs, America, Aug. 4 letter to the editor:
Editor: I also will not check out ever at the self-service cash registers at the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Commercial Way. I know some people are losing their jobs as checkers. Where do they place them? Cleaning restrooms? How very sad.
I agree America should wake up. We are losing our values.

Rescue personnel need our support
Editor: I was at the County Commission meeting Aug. 3. Rick Jordan and two of his allies spoke against the Spring Hill Fire Rescue District Commission. He turned my stomach upside down.
I'm an asthmatic, and when I call them, those boys come to my house and they take care of me with so much TLC, and they don't take me to the hospital until I'm stable.
Mr. Jordan, if you have nothing to do, please leave our firefighters alone. If you are a veteran, go and help your veteran organizations; they need a lot of help.
I'll repeat it again. Firefighters and sheriff's deputies risk their lives to save ours. Respect them.
Remember Sept. 11, 2001 - a lot of them got killed to save lives. God bless them all.

Try wholesale approach to supplies
Re: School supply lists anger board member, Aug. 9 Times:
Editor: Reading about the squabble over school supplies, I had a thought:
Some folks can hardly afford the supplies, and others can afford them but don't like the brand choices listed.
Why not have the school supply agency send a list of needed items (per child) to a wholesaler. The price per child would be much cheaper. Students would then get proper supplies, as specified by the teachers.
Everyone, including taxpayers, parents and school educators, would benefit.
