Cubs ceremony honors Maddux

CHICAGO - The Cubs' Greg Maddux was honored before Sunday's game against the Dodgers in recognition of his 300th career win.

Eight days after winning No. 300 at San Francisco, Maddux gave a short speech thanking his family, teammates and the Chicago fans for their support.

"This has always been a special place for me," Maddux said. "It's an honor for me to come here and play every day here, and I want to thank my teammates because starting pitchers, we all need a lot of help and I have been lucky enough to play on a lot of good teams."

Maddux, surrounded by his family Sunday, didn't come back on the field after winning the game in San Francisco because he didn't want to celebrate in another team's ballpark.

Maddux (300-171) has 106 victories with the Cubs, his team from 1986 to 1992 and this year.

A flag bearing Maddux's name will fly over the press box at Wrigley Field. He was presented with a plaque with the numbers "3-0-0" taken from the centerfield scoreboard.

ATHLETICS: Third baseman Eric Chavez was a late scratch because of stiffness in his back.

BLUE JAYS: As part of a promotion that allowed fans to bring their dogs to the ballpark, 275 dogs were in the stands.

DODGERS: Right-hander Brad Penny went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right biceps, retroactive to Aug. 9. Los Angeles purchased the contract of left-handed reliever Mike Venafro from Triple-A Las Vegas.

EXPOS: Right-hander Jon Rauch went on the 15-day disabled list, two days after he was forced to leave a no-hit bid in the fifth inning when he strained a muscle. Montreal plans to recall right-hander Francis Beltran from Triple-A Edmonton today. ... Shortstop Alex Gonzalez misplayed Lance Berkman's grounder in the fourth, ending Montreal's team record-tying 10-game errorless streak.

INDIANS: Travis Hafner was hit by a pitch for the 17th time. He leads the AL and tied the club record set by Minnie Minoso in 1959.

METS: Shortstop Kaz Matsui was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of back spasms, retroactive to Aug. 9. The Mets purchased the contract of first baseman Craig Brazell from Triple-A Norfolk to fill Matsui's spot.

ORIOLES: Rafael Palmeiro hit his 561st double, surpassing Eddie Murray for 16th all time.

PADRES: Phil Nevin made his first appearance at catcher since Aug. 9, 1999, when Miguel Ojeda left in the middle of the sixth with a bruised left wrist after he was hit by a pitch.

REDS: Rookie third baseman Tim Hummel was optioned to Triple-A Louisville to clear roster space for Luke Hudson, Sunday's starting pitcher. Hummel was in an 0-for-11 slump and had three hits in his last 42 at-bats.

RED SOX: Boston topped 2-million in attendance in Game 58, a team record. The crowd of 34,405 made it 2,033,250. Every game has been a sellout. The record of 60 was set last season.

ROCKIES: Left-hander Brian Fuentes came off the disabled list after missing 62 games with a strained back muscle. Infielder Clint Barnes went back to Triple-A Colorado Springs after appearing in one game. Fuentes pitched the eighth, his first appearance since June 6.

YANKEES: First baseman Jason Giambi ran outside for the first time since being diagnosed with a benign tumor last month. Giambi arrived at the spring training complex in Tampa on Tuesday to work back into shape. He also is lifting weights as part of an indoor program. "It's going in the right direction," said Giambi, who expects to rejoin the Yankees this season.
