BOULDER, Colo. - Colorado wide receiver Jeremy Bloom decided to keep fighting the NCAA for the right to accept commercial ski endorsements while playing football.
Bloom, a world champion freestyle skier, asked the university to appeal the ruling.
Bloom has been fighting the NCAA for two years and initially told family members he did not want to go through another appeal after losing this week.
"I do plan on going through with the final appeal. I owe it to my teammates, my coaches, and myself, to fight this until the end," Bloom said in a statement from Santiago, Chile, where he is training with the U.S. Ski Team.
School officials said earlier they had already appealed the ruling, but apparently decided against it when Bloom declined. On Wednesday, the school filed the appeal after hearing from Bloom, who would have until Sept. 6 - two weeks after the start of classes - to re-enroll.
KENTUCKY: Defensive end Vincent Burns will have arthroscopic surgery to repair a small cartilage tear in his knee. He plans to play against Louisville in the season opener Sept. 5.
LSU: Defensive end Melvin Oliver pleaded innocent to simple battery and an added charge of misdemeanor theft. Oliver appeared at Baton Rouge City Court to enter his plea on charges that he pushed his former girlfriend to the ground. The allegations by Bel Tyretta Leejay, who has a child with Oliver, resulted in a temporary restraining order against the 21-year-old football player. A trial on the criminal charges is Nov. 16.
NORTH CAROLINA: Defensive tackle Chase Page will miss the season after injuring his left pinkie finger in practice. Coach John Bunting said Page tore a flexor tendon when he got his hand caught in an offensive lineman's jersey.
PITTSBURGH: Coach Walt Harris grew irritated as his injury list steadily rose into double-figures. "It's frustrating, and I'm frustrated," Harris said. "You try to get better as a football team and as a football player, but when you've got so many guys out it makes it hard." Sophomore Greg Lee, counted on at wideout after Larry Fitzgerald moved on to the NFL, missed his second consecutive day with a hamstring problem. The other experienced receivers, Terrell Allen (wrist) and Princell Brockenbrough (knee surgery), already are out for the season.
UCLA: Senior wide receiver Tab Perry was readmitted and rejoined the team. Perry was academically ineligible last season.
