Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Kenny King needs surgery on his right wrist and probably will miss the season, the latest hit to a team struggling with injuries.
King, a fifth-round draft pick last season, had been battling rookie Darnell Dockett for the starting job on the right side of the defense. But he injured wrist tendons that had already been surgically repaired once this year. King missed practice Tuesday to have his injury diagnosed.
"He tried to have it fixed in May, I guess, or April, and it's going to be a tough go," coach Dennis Green said about getting King back. In a move to bolster the pass rush after last week's 23-6 exhibition loss at Minnesota, Green moved Dockett, a third-round selection from Florida State, to left defensive end. Green said Dockett would play end in Saturday's game against San Diego in Tempe, Ariz.
King was the fourth starter - first on defense - lost to injury. The Cardinals have been practicing without wide receivers Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald and Bryant Johnson, all essential in the three-wideout set Green expects to play. Defensive end Fred Wakefield sustained his third concussion in a year Saturday, and cornerback Renaldo Hill has a strained hamstring.
REDSKINS: Linebacker LaVar Arrington (knee) and left tackle Chris Samuels (mild concussion) missed practice for the second straight day.
After having 18 players miss Tuesday's afternoon practice, the Redskins only had nine players sit out on Wednesday, including rookie receiver John Standeford, who had an inner ear infection.
SEAHAWKS: Backup quarterback and former Buccaneer Trent Dilfer returned to practice after being sidelined by back spasms last week. He might see action in a preseason game against Denver on Saturday.
If Dilfer, Seattle's No. 2 quarterback behind Matt Hasselbeck, does return, Seneca Wallace will likely have a reduced role.
Wallace played three quarters in relief of Hasselbeck in a victory over Green Bay on Monday night. He completed 14 of 26 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown, with no interceptions.
SAINTS: Derek Ross was claimed off waivers, one day after the cornerback was waived by the Atlanta Falcons.
A third-round draft pick by Dallas in 2002, Ross played in eight games with the Cowboys and two with the Falcons last season. He missed the first four games of the season after surgery on his right knee.
RAMS: Center Dave Wohlabaugh, who has been slow to recover from offseason hip surgery, has been released.
Wohlabaugh failed a training camp physical, and the Rams terminated his contract. He started all 16 games last season, but had not practiced since July 28.
