NL: Bonds in range of 700

SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds homered for the third time in two days to help lead the Giants to a 14-4 rout of the Expos in Wednesday's doubleheader nightcap, giving San Francisco a split.

Bonds connected off Francis Beltran in the fifth inning for his 34th homer and No. 692 of his career. The slugger, 40, left afterward to rest and Dustan Mohr replaced him in leftfield.

Mohr, batting in Bonds' spot, homered into the leftfield bleachers with two outs in the seventh. The two-run shot was estimated at 451 feet and gave him seven homers.

Beltran became the 409th pitcher to give up a homer to Bonds, who drew two intentional walks before sending the first pitch he saw over the wall in right. The six-time MVP has 174 walks this season, 92 intentional.

Wayne Franklin gave the Giants an impressive spot start, pitching six strong innings and getting his first career two-RBI game. After Tony Batista's run-scoring single in the first, Franklin retired 12 of the next 13, including eight in a row in one stretch.

The left-hander, activated from the disabled list after the Giants' 6-2 loss in the first game, allowed one run on three hits, struck out four and walked one in his first start this season. Franklin was winless in his last five starts for the Brewers in 2003. This was his first win as a starter since Aug. 27 at Cincinnati.

The Giants had their six-game winning streak snapped in the opener.

Bonds' pinch-hit popup in the eighth turned into a bizarre double play because of Mohr's blunder on the bases. The Giants trailed 3-2 when Mohr and Deivi Cruz singled. That brought up Bonds, causing the crowd to go crazy.

But Bonds, who didn't start the first game after homering twice Tuesday night, could not deliver with one out. He hit a foul pop that Batista caught, and the third baseman wound up with a double play when Mohr lost track of the outs, wandered off second base and was easily thrown out.

MARLINS 6, DODGERS 4: Pinch-hitter Lenny Harris delivered a three-run double off Eric Gagne with two outs in the ninth, rallying visiting Florida.

Gagne blew his second save in 100 chances dating to Aug. 26, 2002. The 2003 Cy Young Award winner entered with a 4-2 lead in the ninth.

Miguel Cabrera began the rally with a one-out double, and Jeff Conine followed with a single. Gagne got Juan Encarnacion on a popup, then walked pinch-hitter Paul Lo Duca after running the count to 3-and-2 on his former batterymate.

Harris, who holds the major-league record with 190 career pinch-hits, followed with a liner into right-center to give Florida a 6-4 lead.

CUBS 7, BREWERS 5 (11): Corey Patterson hit a two-run homer in the 11th to lead visiting Chicago.

Patterson's 16th home run came with two outs off former Devil Ray Travis Phelps, who was making his first appearance for Milwaukee.

Russell Branyon had two home runs and five RBIs for the Brewers, including a two-run homer in the eighth to tie it at 5.

BRAVES 6, PADRES 5: Andruw Jones hit a two-run homer off Trevor Hoffman in the ninth, and Marcus Giles threw out the potential tying run at the plate on a relay from J.D. Drew for the final out to preserve visiting Atlanta's comeback win.

Julio Franco led off the ninth with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Charles Thomas before Jones hit a 2-and-1 fastball over the centerfield wall.

ASTROS 9, PHILLIES 8: Carlos Beltran's two-run double in the eighth lifted Houston, desperately trying to stay alive in the wild-card race. Marlon Byrd and Placido Polanco homered for the Phillies, who fell to 1-8 on their homestand.

REDS 5, CARDINALS 4: Rookie Josh Hancock won for the first time as a starter and Sean Casey drove in three to help visiting Cincinnati avoid a three-game sweep. Scott Rolen homered and Albert Pujols doubled twice for St. Louis.

D'BACKS 6, PIRATES 3: Shea Hillenbrand's three-run homer capped a five-run fifth to lift host Arizona. Casey Fossum pitched seven solid innings to end a personal six-game skid and win for the first time since July 1.

METS AT ROCKIES, PPD.: Heavy rains washed out the game before it started. It is scheduled to be made up as part of a doubleheader today.
