COLLEGES: Georgia appeals sanctions
Georgia has filed an appeal of sanctions against the school's basketball program, claiming some of the NCAA's findings were "clearly inaccurate." Georgia hopes to have three of the 16 penalties revoked in a notice of appeal filed Friday - its four-year probation, the loss of a scholarship for each of the next three seasons and the forfeiture of 30 wins from the 2001-02 and 2003-03 seasons. The violation dealt with the failure to report unauthorized, personal long-distance telephone calls made by six players during 2001 road trips until July 2002. The calls totaled $1,500, which the players did not pay.
La SALLE: Maine coach John Giannini will be named basketball coach on Monday, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
