NFC O-line injuries hit Panthers

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Once considered a rebuilding project, the Panthers offensive line has become a concern as injuries mount.

Two starters - Tutan Reys and Matt Willig - were carted off the field Sunday.

Reyes was initially diagnosed with a sprained ankle, and Willig with a bruised knee. "These could be very minor, so it's hard to comment on them until I know what the prognosis is," coach John Fox said. Reyes' injury appeared to be the more serious. He left the field in obvious pain and was barely able to put pressure on his left leg.

Although Reyes has never started, he has had an outstanding camp and was dubbed the replacement for Jeno James, who signed a free-agent contract with the Dolphins in the offseason.

Willig was the second-string right tackle but was pressed into duty after free agent Adam Meadows retired two weeks ago. Meadows was brought in to replace Todd Steussie, who was released and signed with the Bucs in March. Right guard Kevin Donnalley also retired.

The Panthers also have lost defensive end Kavika Pittman for the season after he reinjured the left knee that sidelined him most of last season.

EAGLES: Free-agent running back Dorsey Levens will return and replace the injured Correll Buckhalter, Levens' agent said. "It's an opportunity to play, and it's a situation where he knows the offense and has an opportunity to win a Super Bowl," agent Hadley Engelhard said. The team declined comment. Buckhalter tore a tendon in his right knee Friday against Baltimore.

GIANTS: Tight end Jeremy Shockey is listed as day to day after straining his right hamstring. "No injury, a setback," he said.
