SAN FRANCISCO - Giants All-Star pitcher Jason Schmidt, bothered by a sore groin, had his next start pushed back four days.
Schmidt threw off flat ground Sunday then went inside for about 15 pitches off the mound in the indoor batting cage. Schmidt, who leads the majors with a 2.52 ERA, was scheduled to pitch Tuesday but instead will return Saturday.
"It's still a little tender, and this gives us the opportunity to be more cautious," trainer Stan Conte said. "He threw at full speed and is progressing toward his next start."
Left-hander Wayne Franklin will take Schmidt's place Tuesday against Florida.
Schmidt had the same injury during spring training in 2002 and started the season on the disabled list.
In addition, first baseman J.T. Snow had his infected left elbow drained and tested and was held out for precautionary reasons. He's expected to return Tuesday.
ANGELS: Designated hitter Troy Glaus, who was expected to be out for the season, took live batting practice and ran the bases. Glaus, who had right shoulder surgery in May, hopes to go on a rehab assignment before the minor-league seasons end Sept. 6.
BLUE JAYS: Outfielder Frank Catalanotto will miss the rest of the season because of surgery on his strained groin. He was put on the 15-day DL, and lefty Dave Maurer was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse. Catalanotto hit .293 in 75 games but was mired in an 0-for-18 slump.
EXPOS: First baseman Nick Johnson will miss the rest of the season because of a broken cheekbone sustained when a sharp grounder took a bad hop and hit him Friday.
ORIOLES: Instead of a third rehab assignment, designated hitter David Seguiwill accompany the team on its 13-game road trip and likely be activated during it. He has been on the DL since April 30 after surgery on his left knee.
TWINS: X-rays on first baseman Justin Morneau's left hand were negative. He was hit by a pitch by Cleveland's C.C. Sabathia and is day to day.
YANKEES: Javier Vazquez, whose grandmother died over the weekend, flew to Puerto Rico for services and won't start tonight. Mike Mussina will start, and Vazquez will go Tuesday.
