LARGO - An Aug. 6 car crash on Ulmerton Road that killed a woman also has claimed the life of her husband.

William G. Carter, 83, of Clearwater died Aug. 11 at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. Carter was involved in a crash on Ulmerton Road five days earlier in which his wife, Hazel Carter, also 83, died instantly. Largo police said Mr. Carter suffered injuries to his upper body in the crash, which ultimately led to his death. Police said Mr. Carter was driving his 1996 Buick west on Ulmerton Road when he tried to turn south onto Cumberland Drive. However, he steered into the path of a 2003 Sterling box truck, which hit the Buick's passenger side.

"He made a bad left turn in front of the truck," said Largo police Sgt. Butch Ward. No charges will be filed in the crash. The driver of the truck, Elwood T. White, 50, was not injured, police said. According to obituary information, Mr. Carter was a retired firefighter from New Bedford, Mass., and was in the U.S. Navy in World War II. Mrs. Carter was retired from the human resources department of a shoe distribution company.
