New 'Real World' cast announced

Published August 25, 2004

Fifteen years and over 100 strangers since its debut, MTV's The Real World has moved to Philadelphia with a fresh crop of 21- to 24-year-olds.

Karamo, Landon, Melanie, MJ, Sarah, Shavonda and Willie (MTV won't reveal their last names) are the latest strangers plucked from obscurity and picked to live in a house together, or in this case, a former bank.

The 10,000-square-foot house, in the heart of Philadelphia's Old City neighborhood, has the standard Real World amenities, including a hot tub, fitness equipment and pool table. But unlike the Seattle season's pier or the Las Vegas season's Palms Hotel and Casino penthouse, the Philly digs have history: The house was built at the turn of the century and was originally the Union National Bank of Philadelphia. More recently, it served as the headquarters for the Merchant Seamen's Institute and Church.

And according to MTV.com, Karamo attended Florida A&M University, and Sarah was born and raised in Florida and plans to attend law school at the University of Florida in the fall. The new season of The Real World premieres Sept. 7.

Dangerfield to have heart surgery

LOS ANGELES - Comedian Rodney Dangerfield was hospitalized Tuesday for heart valve replacement surgery.

Dangerfield, 82, underwent brain surgery last year to reduce his chances of having a stroke during the heart operation.

Asked how long he would remain in the hospital after today's operation, he said: "If things go right, I'll be there about a week, and if things don't go right, I'll be there about an hour and a half."

The comic and actor recently released his autobiography, It's Not Easy Being Me: A Lifetime of No Respect but Plenty of Sex and Drugs.

Dangerfield's films include Back to School and Caddyshack. He is set to guest star on the sitcom Still Standing this fall and will be heard as himself in the animated comedy Family Guy.
