CLEVELAND - Coco Crisp caused more commotion than a runaway squirrel.
Crisp dived for a go-ahead bunt single in the eighth inning that sent Cleveland over the Yankees 4-3 on Wednesday night, ending the Indians' nine-game losing streak.
The Indians rallied for two runs in the eighth, providing an entertaining end for the 30,605 fans who spent much of the evening cheering for a squirrel.
"It was the Rally Squirrel. He was our secret weapon," Crisp said. "They've got the Rally Monkey in Anaheim and we've got our guy."
The rodent ran onto the field in the third inning, later darting between Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and shortstop Derek Jeter.
He spent the rest of the game on the field. Play was held up several times, including in the seventh with Jeter at the plate and a runner on second. Several players grinned at the sight.
"I don't think I've ever seen a squirrel hang out for entire ballgame like that," Indians manager Eric Wedge said.
The Indians superimposed a team jersey over a photo of the squirrel on the giant television screen in center. Later, the squirrel appeared to be eating a peanut while nestling in the grass.
"I noticed he kept running away from (Gary) Sheffield," Yankees manager Joe Torre said.
Cleveland trailed 3-2 when Tom Gordon walked Ben Broussard and Casey Blake to start the eighth. Jody Gerut sacrificed both runners over and Ronnie Belliard's sacrifice fly tied it.
Crisp then laid down a drag bunt past Gordon, diving to barely beat second baseman Enrique Wilson's throw.
"My mind-set was show some moxie and let's get it done," Crisp said.
He jumped to his feet after being called safe and pulled off his helmet.
"I was just so pumped up," Crisp said. "I don't really remember what I did after I slid. I was just so excited."
Wedge raved about the play.
"Coco did it on his own," he said. "That's what you need in this situation, somebody to step up and have the guts to make something happen."
A'S 3, ORIOLES 0: Marco Scutaro hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth, lifting host Oakland.
B.J. Ryan struck out the first two batters he faced before Damian Miller singled and Bobby Crosby, hitless in 21 career at-bats against Baltimore, walked on a full count. Scutaro then drilled a 2-and-1 delivery over the leftfield fence for his fifth homer.
Octavio Dotel pitched a scoreless ninth for the victory, the Athletics' third straight, while sending the Orioles to their season-high ninth loss in a row.
A's starter Rich Harden pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing four hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
RED SOX 11, BLUE JAYS 5: David Ortiz homered twice and drove in four and Curt Schilling earned his 16th win as Boston finished a 5-1 road trip.
Schilling (16-6) joined Oakland's Mark Mulder (17-4) as the league's only pitchers with at least 16 wins. Schilling allowed one run and seven hits in 61/3 innings, struck out nine and walked none. His last strikeout, Gregg Zaun in the seventh, was the 2,700th of his career, making him the 18th player to reach that mark.
TWINS 8, RANGERS 5: Visiting Minnesota had 13 hits off Texas starter Ryan Drese, a career high against the right-hander and one shy of a Rangers record. He pitched 32/3 innings, his shortest outing this season.
Only one Twins starter didn't have a hit the first two innings, when Minnesota had 10 and took a 6-2 lead. They had four infield singles and a bloop to left while scoring twice on grounders, then on Drese's errant pickoff throw.
TIGERS 5, WHITE SOX 4: Marcus Thames drove in three and Nate Robertson pitched eight strong innings for host Detroit. Carlos Guillen added three hits, including a homer, for the Tigers, who have won six of nine.
ANGELS 21, ROYALS 6: Jeff DaVanon became the first Angels player in 13 years to hit for the cycle and drove in four runs, leading Anaheim to a 21-6 victory Wednesday night that completed a seven-game season sweep of the Kansas City Royals.
Jose Molina hit his first career grand slam, and Garret Anderson had five RBIs and three hits, including a three-run homer. Darin Erstad and Vladimir Guerrero had three hits each, and Erstad scored four runs.
