OTTAWA - Lighting forwards Vincent Lecavalier and Brad Richards scored in the second period to lead Canada to a 3-1 win over the United States in a World Cup of Hockey exhibition game Wednesday night.
The Canadians avenged a 3-1 loss to the Americans on Monday night in Columbus, exhibiting more energy and physical play Wednesday.
"It was a start," Canadian forward Jarome Iginla said. "We got outcompeted in those areas in the first one.
Lecavalier started the scoring when he beat Ty Conklin on a 2-on-1 break with Mario Lemieux in the second.
Just over two minutes later, Joe Sakic scored on a 2-on-1 through the five-hole, and Richards capped the binge with a goal on an assist from Lemieux.
Lemieux was impressive in his first action after sitting out Monday's game along with Richards and Martin St. Louis.
"What I liked was that our forwards worked harder getting back to the puck and gave some outlet plays for the defense," Canadian coach Pat Quinn said. SWEDEN 2, FINLAND 1: Markus Naslund scored two minutes into overtime, leading Sweden past Finland in an exhibition game in Stockholm. Naslund scored on a wrist shot past goalie Mikka Kiprusoff. P.J. Axelsson of the Boston Bruins set up the game-winner with a perfect pass.
LEOPOLD OUT: The Flames' Jordan Leopold pulled out of the World Cup because of a concussion, the third key defenseman lost by the defending champion United States.
He was hurt during the third period of Monday night's 3-1 pretournament win over Canada, a game in which he scored the final goal.
Two star defensemen, the Red Wings' Derian Hatcher and Mathieu Schneider, already had withdrawn.
RANGERS: New York signed defenseman Jason Marshall. Marshall appeared in 24 games with the Wild and Sharks last season, with one goal and six assists.
PANTHERS: Florida re-signed center Vaclav Nedorost and signed unrestricted free-agent goalie Patrick DesRochers to one-year deals.
