Xpress, the Coolest Section of the St. Petersburg Times, is the home for features, news and views of interest to young readers. Most of the work in Xpress, which appears on Mondays in Floridian, is produced by the Times' X-Team. The team of journalists ages 9-17 from around the Tampa Bay area is selected every year at the end of the school year to serve during the following school term. The current team of 12 was chosen out of 150 applicants. Watch for X-Team application forms in Xpress during the month of May.

Today's Xpressions marks the end of summertime offerings from students throughout the bay area. However, three new themes await your creative input. But hurry - the deadline for September is Wednesday. See the box below for details.

Xpressions, our monthly showcase for the art, writing and photography of students through the 12th grade, is looking for your work! Xpressions appears the last Monday of each month inside Floridian.
Please read the following instructions before submitting your work, which must be based on the designated themes.
SEPTEMBER: MY MOST DREADED HABIT - Maybe it's biting your nails. Or chewing your eraser or pen top. Or drumming your fingers as you search for an idea. Describe in words, art or photography the habit you would most like to be rid of. Deadline: Postmark Sept. 8.
OCTOBER: A POLITICIAN WORTH MY ADMIRATION - In recognition of the upcoming presidential election, describe in words, art or photography what it is you particularly admire about the current or historical political figure you have chosen. Deadline: Postmark Oct. 6.
NOVEMBER: WHEN I WAS YOUNG IN . . . - This theme idea comes from the Tampa Bay Area Writing Project. In words, art or photography, describe what it was like for you to be young in a city (Tampa, St. Petersburg, etc.); a place (school, church, etc.) or any other kind of situation you can dream up. Deadline: Postmark Nov. 5.
DECEMBER: OPEN THEME - Send us your creative work (art, words or photography) depicting the topic of your choice. Deadline: Postmark Dec. 8.
Artwork must be on white, unlined paper, with the medium stated on the back (oil, pastel, crayon, etc.). Your work will not be considered for publication without ALL of the following information: your name, age, name of school and grade, your address, Zip code, phone number with area code and your e-mail address. Teachers: Please include your contact information.
IMPORTANT: Stories must be no longer than 150 words. We will return only artwork and only if you indicate that you want it back.
