TAMPA - A family argument in Palm River escalated into a shooting and a suicide when a father shot his stepdaughter before killing himself in front of relatives Sunday afternoon, Hillsborough sheriff's officials said.

James Hatcher, 43, shot Lashawanda Scullock, 24, in the shoulder about 4:20 p.m., Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Rod Reder said.

"He retreated to a bedroom, came out with a handgun, then turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the head," Reder said.

The shooting took place at 7407 Manchester Lane.

Scullock was taken to Tampa General Hospital. Information on her condition Sunday night was not available.
