State Farm sees surge as homeowners assess losses

By JEFF HARRINGTON
Published September 9, 2004

State Farm, with nearly a fourth of the market the largest private insurer in Florida, reported a surge in claim filing for Hurricane Frances' damage between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon. The company said its homeowners' insurance claims more than doubled within a day to 34,705, and auto claims jumped from 2,036 to 3,425.

"People are getting their power back and getting the chance to see the damage," State Farm spokesman Tom Hagerty said.

By comparison, nearly a month after Hurricane Charley struck, State Farm said it is now up to 69,330 homeowners' claims and 16,541 auto claims for that storm.

Allstate also has a large exposure in the area ravaged by Frances, but it is not releasing a daily count of claims.
