TAMPA - Four city beaches were closed Wednesday because of high concentrations of bacteria, which is being attributed to heavy stormwater runoff from Frances.
The beaches are Ben T. Davis, Cypress Point, Davis Island and Picnic Island.
The Hillsborough County Health Department issued an advisory after water sampling showed increased concentrations of enterococci and fecal coliform bacteria. That can indicate the presence of other microorganisms that may cause disease, infections and rashes, according to the Florida Department of Health's Web site.
The Health Department will retest the water Monday. The beaches will be opened when water samples show bacteria levels are within acceptable levels.
