SPCA changes location for membership meeting

BROOKSVILLE - The SPCA has changed the location for its quarterly membership meeting. It will be at 7:30 p.m. today at the Marine Corps League Detachment, 8405 Sunshine Grove Road.

The speaker will be Tom Austin, vice president of Hernando Emergency Animal Rescue Team. He will discuss preparing for hurricanes and other disasters and what to do to protect your animals.

Anyone interested is invited to attend. For information, call the SPCA shelter at 596-7000.

Kiwanis, Sheriff's Office to co-host Kids Fun Day

BROOKSVILLE - The Brooksville Kiwanis and Hernando County Sheriff's Office will co-host the annual Kids Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 18 at Tom Varn Park, off Darby Lane.

The free family event will include games, prizes, hot dogs and sodas. Free funnel cakes will be provided by Bill Koenig Jr. of Florida Tax Advisory/Raymond James.

The Sheriff's Office will have displays featuring the DARE vehicle, sheriff's helicopter, marine unit's WaveRunner, a COPPS four-wheeler, traffic unit motorcycle, forensics, a K-9 demonstration and the Sheriff's Explorers. Sheriff's community services personnel will give away 300 firearm safety locks to adults who attend (limit two per household).

"Writing Your Life Story' course starts Sept. 20

BROOKSVILLE - The USF Learning in Retirement in Hernando will offer a course on "Writing Your Life Story," which will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 20 through Nov. 8, in the County Commission boardroom (fourth floor), Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St. Participants will learn how to write about the important times in their lives. The cost is $50.

Blood pressure clinic needs registrar, nurse

SPRING HILL - The Volunteer Blood Pressure Clinic is in need of a registrar and a nurse to help out.

The clinic offers free blood pressure screenings from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on the second Monday of each month at the Lake House, 1202 Kenlake Ave. The next clinic will be this Monday.

Horticulture agent to offer free class

SPRING HILL - Urban Horticulture agent Jim Moll will present a free class on "Palms for Hernando County" at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Forest Oaks Government Center, 7479 Forest Oaks Blvd.

A question-and-answer session will follow. No registration is required. However, seating is limited and will be addressed first-come, first-served. For information, call the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service at 754-4433.

Herb society to host second afternoon tea

BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando Herb Society will host its second Afternoon Tea from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 19490 Oliver St. Sandwiches and sweets will be served.

The cost is $5 at the door. Reservations are required by Wednesday. For information, call Patti Yontz at 666-8142. The event will include sandwiches and sweets.
