Volunteer tutors needed to teach basic English

The Literacy Council of Upper Pinellas County needs volunteer tutors to teach basic literacy and English as a second language to people who need to improve their reading and writing skills. Teaching skills are not necessary. Volunteers are given training classes.

Humane Society Web site displays available pets

CLEARWATER - The Humane Society of North Pinellas Inc. has gone high-tech.

People can now view more than 150 adoptable dogs and cats by visiting the Web site at humanesocietyofpinellas.org, then selecting Clearwater, FL.

The Web site is updated regularly, gives hints on how to care for pets and offers information on resources available to pet owners.

The Clearwater shelter also offers half-price adoptions for some pets. For information, stop by the shelter at 3040 State Road 590 or call (727) 797-7722.

Gift, craft shop features work of senior citizens

CLEARWATER - More than 100 senior citizens make the unique handcrafted gifts sold at the Senior Citizens Arts and Crafts Gift Shop, 940 Court St. The cooperative gift shop is sponsored by Senior Citizens Services Inc., Pinellas County.

Among the items for sale are baby clothes, woodcrafts, quilts and afghans, kitchen and household gifts. There also is a year-round Christmas section. For information, call (727) 442-4266.

Sunshine Brass Band needs players

Sunshine Brass Band is looking for a few more brass players. Especially needed are players of cornets, trombones, alto horns and tubas.

The band is planning a number of concerts and competitions.
