Due to the impact of the past two hurricanes on Pasco County's students, teachers and school schedules, student progress reports for the first quarter will be distributed Thursday instead of Monday as previously scheduled.

Kerry rally postponed because of Ivan

NEW PORT RICHEY - Organizers have postponed the "Help is on the way" rally scheduled for Monday at Sims Park because of concerns about Hurricane Ivan. Neither Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee, nor former Sen. Max Cleland, a fellow Vietnam veteran, can attend because of the approaching storm, said John Coyne, president of the West Coast Council of the United Auto Workers Retirees, the group hosting the rally. The group will still host an indoor gathering at 11 a.m. Monday with U.S. Rep. Jim Davis, D-Tampa, Kerry swift boat veteran Del Sandusky and local candidates for political office. The gathering will be at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 2040 Grand Blvd. in New Port Richey. The Florida Alliance for Retired Americans still is holding its quarterly meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Quality Inn Suites in New Port Richey, although the storm could affect former Attorney General Janet Reno's plans to speak at that event, alliance president Tony Fransetta said.
