Soldiers' Christmas letters can serve again

No doubt about it: Exchangers are involved in the most interesting activities. Look no further than Suzanne Yankowski, who is putting together an exhibit of letters and other postal artifacts that depict the history of Christmas during wartime.

Suzanne already has some wonderful items that span the Revolution through World War II, but she needs wartime letters from the past 60 years. She looks for letters written by our soldiers that are postmarked Dec. 25 or cards and letters that describe their Christmas. If you are willing to share yours, Suzanne promises them a place of honor in the exhibit. Call her at (727) 536-9051. Andrea Young is looking for some help with her lifelong hobby, collecting china horses. She has been doing it since she was a kid, but finding items is getting harder. She has attended estate sales, garage sales, antiques sales, to no avail.

The figurines Andrea collects are 6 to 8 inches high and were made in the '50s and '60s. Some are known as Hagen-Renaker, others are Japanese-made. Condition doesn't matter; broken horses often can be repaired. Andrea may be reached at 727 344-1840, or e-mail legnets1@mailcity.com The Harpers are seeking new homes for a large number of blocks of black walnut wood suitable for creating toys, parquet flooring or breadboards. The wood is beautiful, and the couple had hoped to do some artistic things with it; unfortunately, as happens to folks with busy schedules, no time was available to get to those projects. Interested readers, please call (727) 322-0840 and leave a message; the Harpers will return your call.

Jack Frankel of Treasure Island needs a Zenith (model VM6300) or JVC videocamcorder, compact VHS C from 1985 to 1995. He has a number of compact tapes and needs the camcorder to copy them. He also needs machine parts, no longer being manufactured, to repair his own camcorder. If you can help, please give Jack a call at (727) 367-1251. Barbara Leary of Ruskin loves those oversized clothing hangers that sometimes come back with the dry cleaning. But she can't find them in stores. If you know where they may be purchased, please call Barbara at (813) 645-7388. Mary Jackson of New Port Richey used to make baby robes from towels, one robe from each towel. Now she has the opportunity to make one for a special friend, but she has mislaid the instructions on how to cut the towel. If you know how to make this kind of baby garment, please call Mary at (727) 376-5761. A big welcome to Cindy Shea of Spring Hill, who recently moved here from Long Island, N.Y. She needs assistance from cross-stitchers and needlepointers to find two kits that first were offered by needlework catalogs. She has been trying to find them for some time; maybe success lies with an exchange reader. If the kits are partially worked or you have only a pattern, Cindy still will be delighted.

The first item is a cross-stitch eagle, 11 by 15 inches, from a kit titled "Totem" by artist Richard Luce No. 140544, which retailed for $21.95. It was worked on blue aida cloth. The second kit is a needlepoint stocking (No. 017653), 12 by 17 inches, that features a red, white and blue snowman with an eagle; it was titled "All American Stocking" and was created by artist Conn Baker Gibney. (Cindy says her husband loves eagles.) She may be reached at (352) 683-6068. Peggy Daley of Clearwater also has a needlepoint question. Does somebody have a book or pamphlet of instructions for needlepoint for beginners? Peggy has been given a lovely canvas kit, and she is totally at sea as to how to start. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Please call (727) 797-5209. Mr. and Mrs. D. Caho of Holiday would like to transfer some songs from a reel-to-reel tape to a cassette. The songs, sung by a late friend who was an entertainer, are very meaningful to the couple; they want to hear their friend's voice again. If you can assist the Cahos, please call them at (727) 938-8792. Charles Obremski of St. Petersburg attended Harvest Temple for a few years during the 1970s, when Vep Ellis was the pastor. The Sunday services were taped, but Charles has only one of them. If anyone happens to have any of these '70s tapes, he would like to hear from you. Please call (727) 525-3890. Karla of Oldsmar has yarn and fabric she would like to donate to volunteers who knit or sew for children and veterans in hospitals. Please call (813) 855-8100. Send requests to Reader Exchange, Floridian, St. Petersburg Times, P.O. Box 1121, St. Petersburg 33731 or e-mail cole@sptimes.com Requests will be accepted only by mail or e-mail. This is an exchange column, so we will not run items that are for sale.
