NEW SMYRNA BEACH - Retired Marine Corps Lt. Col. Jack Bolt, a member of the famed "Black Sheep Squadron" in World War II who went on to distinguish himself flying fighter jets in the Korean War, died Wednesday. He was 83.

Bolt, a lawyer in New Smyrna Beach for 20 years, died at Tampa General Hospital from a sudden onset of acute leukemia, said his son, Robert Bolt.

Bolt, raised in Sanford, enlisted in the Navy in 1941 and flew with the legendary Maj. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington's squadron, shooting down six Japanese Zeros in the Pacific. He piloted an F-86 Sabre jet in Korea and shot down six MiG-15 aircraft. He was thought to be the United States' last surviving "double ace," having shot down at least five enemy aircraft in two wars.

Bolt retired from the military in 1962. At age 47, he enrolled in the University of Florida law school. After graduation, Bolt became its associate dean for two years. He entered private practice in New Smyrna Beach, and was attorney for the local utilities commission. He retired at age 70.

Bolt was awarded the Navy Cross and inducted last year into the Commemorative Air Force's American Combat Airman Hall of Fame in Midland, Texas.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy; a son, Robert Bolt, a daughter, Barbara Bolt; and two grandchildren.
