McAlvanah speaks to Daybreak Rotary

By Times Staff Writer
Published September 12, 2004

Kris McAlvanah recently spoke to the Zephyrhills Daybreak Rotary about the Brain Tumor Action Network. Kris' husband , Thomas Patrick McAlvanah, a former president of Zephyrhills Daybreak Rotary and a Zephyrhills attorney, lost his battle with cancer a year ago. The fight for his life and for others with brain tumors became the passion of the McAlvanahs.

The Brain Tumor Action Network is designed to better educate tumor patients and their family members about various social issues which may directly affect the outcome of the care and treatment of brain tumor patients.

One Project of Brain Tumor Action Network is the project Hidden Under Our Hats. Brain tumor victims or their families donate a hat with their name, age at diagnosis and, for those who have died, the date of death, written on it. The hats become a traveling exhibit around the United States. Displayed at cancer centers, conferences and fund raisers, the hats help to increase awareness of brain tumors and the need for research funding. The hat exhibit was on display at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa in May of this year. For more information about Brain Tumor Action Network, visit their Web site at www.btn.org or call 813 748-4560.
