ACC: Cavs bully their way past Heels

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Wali Lundy scored three touchdowns and Marquis Weeks returned a kickoff 100 yards against North Carolina for the second time in three years to give Virginia a 56-24 victory Saturday.

The Cavaliers offensive line manhandled the Tar Heels' defensive front, opening big holes for Lundy and fullback Jason Snelling as Virginia put together scoring drives of 77, 68, 97, 79, 90 and 47 yards.

"I had a long time on the sideline to know we weren't playing well on defense," said Tar Heels coach John Bunting, who stood for extended periods watching the action with his arms crossed.

"It's not a surprise to me. It is a big disappointment to me. I know we can play better."

After the game, Bunting could be heard through cinder-block locker room walls thundering his frustration at his players for several minutes.

Virginia did not punt until 14:31 left in the game and then only because a personal foul moved the Cavaliers out of field-goal range. Snelling ran for 80 yards and Lundy for 73 as the Cavaliers gained 549 total yards, 297 on the ground.

Weeks, whose school record-tying 100-yard kickoff return sparked Virginia's 37-27 come-from-behind victory over North Carolina two years ago, took away what little confidence North Carolina could muster by doing it again.

After Darian Durant connected with Derrelle Mitchell on a 7-yard touchdown in the second quarter to cut Virginia's lead to 21-7, Weeks took the ensuing kickoff up the middle, broke to the left and picked up a wall of blockers.

The Tar Heels moved inside the Virginia 10 two other times in the first half but managed only a 22-yard field goal. The other series ended at the 3 when Chris Canty stuffed Ronnie McGill for a 1-yard loss on fourth down.

MARYLAND 45, TEMPLE 22: Joel Statham completed 18 of 25 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns and Sammy Maldonado ran for a career-high 106 yards and two touchdowns for the Terps, who won their 12th straight at home.

The Owls have lost nine straight overall and 19 straight to ranked opponents.

Statham, who fumbled four times and threw an interception last weekend, hit Jo Jo Walker for a 12-yard touchdown 4:35 in. Maldonado made it 14-0 with a left side 2-yard scamper with 3:46 left in the quarter.

And Statham led 85- and 76-yard drives in the second quarter, capped by Josh Allen's 5-yard run and Derrick Fenner's 14-yard reception, for a 28-0 halftime lead.

Maryland rolled up 319 first-half yards to Temple's 100.

VA. TECH 63, W. MICH. 0: Bryan Randall threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns for the host Hokies, who ended a four-game losing streak. They lost the last three of last season and the opener to Southern Cal.

The Hokies defense and special teams helped a sputtering offense during the first half. Jimmy Williams returned an interception 21 yards to set up Eddie Royal's 11-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead. Cedric Humes made it 14-0 on a 21-yard run in the second quarter after a fumble recovery.

Randall hit Richard Johnson over the middle for a 32-yard gain, setting up Justin Hamilton's 1-yard touchdown run. Randall then hit Royal for a 35-yard touchdown for a 28-0 halftime lead.
