Two split big track jackpot

BERLIN - Triple jumper Christian Olsson and 400-meter runner Tonique Williams-Darling split a $1-million jackpot Sunday at the season's final Golden League track and field meet.

The jackpot goes to athletes who win their events at all six Golden League meets. To collect the athletes must compete at next weekend's World Athletics Final in Monaco.

"When you get to this stage, the money is the most important," Olsson said.

COLLEGES: Seminoles win in OT

The FSU women's soccer team (4-1) beat Stetson 1-0 in overtime on a goal by junior Leah Gallegos in the 92nd minute. It was her 11th winner and fourth in overtime, both FSU career records. ... Stephanie Freeman and Christine Johnson scored for visiting Florida (4-1-1), which tied Missouri at 2. ... Tampa defeated Central Arkansas 3-1 as Melanie Moody scored the winner in the 64th minute.

CYCLING: U.S. rider leads Vuelta

Leonardo Piepoli of Italy won the mountainous ninth stage of the Spanish Vuelta in Alicante, Spain, and American Floyd Landis kept the overall lead. Landis, of the U.S. Postal Service team, was ninth, 33 seconds ahead of teammate Manuel Beltran.

T-MOBILE INTERNATIONAL: Charles Dionne finished eight seconds ahead of the field after taking the lead in the final three miles in San Francisco.

GYMNASTICS: Tour stops postponed

Because of the threat of Hurricane Ivan, three Florida stops on the Tour of Gymnastics Champions, including one in Tampa, were canceled. The stop in Tampa, scheduled Friday, was moved to Nov. 27 at the St. Pete Times Forum. Shows in Tallahassee and Miami also were scratched.

MOTOCROSS: Carmichael ends perfect

Ricky Carmichael finished his second undefeated season in AMA Motocross, winning the final two 250cc races of 2004 in San Bernardino, Calif. He also went undefeated in 2002. Haines City's James Stewart won the 125cc division. He will move up to the 250cc class.

SOCCER: Champs to open in '06

Germany declined the chance to play in the opening game of the 2006 World Cup, with the host nation ceding the honor to Brazil, the 2002 champion. The decision maintains a World Cup tradition that began in 1974 in which the defending champ plays in the first game. The opener in Germany will be June 9, 2006, in Munich. Brazil still must make the 32-team field.

OLYMPICS: Twelve women's teams will compete at the 2008 Beijing Games, an increase of two from this year in Athens, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said.

PARIMUTUELS: Santos rides winner

Lucifer's Stone moved off the rail for room in midstretch and beat Barancella by 13/4 lengths in the $300,000 Garden City Breeders' Cup Handicap at Belmont Park. Lucifer's Stone, ridden by Jose Santos, won for the fourth time in six starts this year.

MONMOUTH PARK: Seducer's Song held off Go Robin to win the $150,000 Boiling Springs Stakes in Oceanport, N.J.

OBITUARY: John J. Hanle, former general manager of Tampa Bay Downs, died Tuesday at home in Clearwater. He was 70. Mr. Hanley also was a retired jockey and horse racing official.

GREYHOUNDS: Derby Lane in St. Petersburg and Tampa Greyhound will be closed today and Tuesday because of the threat of Hurricane Ivan.

BOXING: Undefeated Miguel Cotto won the vacant WBO junior welterweight title late Saturday, stopping Kelson Pinto in the sixth round in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Also, Daniel Santos retained his WBO junior middleweight title in a split decision over Antonio Margarito.
