Recreation Center opens doors to new sport: fencing

SEMINOLE - The sport of fencing is coming to the Recreation Center.

Instructor Brandon Kelly plans to offer private 30-minute lessons on Thursday evenings for beginning to advanced fencers, ages 10 and older. Beginning students will be provided equipment to use during class.

Later, Kelly plans to add group lessons and start a Seminole Fencing Club.

Kelly is a competitive fencer, has held leadership positions in the United States Fencing Association and coached fencing at the Virginia Academy of Fencing in Springfield, Va.

Preregistration is required, along with a recreation membership card to enroll. To register for the lessons, come to the Recreation Center at 9100 113th St. N or call 391-8345 for more information.

Friday's Music in the Park will feature bluegrass music by Gypsy Wind, 7-9 p.m. at Seminole City Park, 7464 Ridge Road.

The free event is the second of six Friday evening concerts jointly sponsored by the recreation department and area businesses and organizations.

Upcoming events in the 8th Annual Music in the Park series include:

Sept. 24: country music by Wiley Fox;

Oct. 1: oldies rock 'n' roll by the Tom Kats;

Oct. 8: R&B/jazz by Suzette Jennings;

Oct 15: Blues by T.C. Carr & Friends.

Residents planning to attend should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. Food and beverages will be available for sale. Alcoholic beverages and glass containers are not permitted in the park.

A joint Chamber of Commerce mixer and fundraiser for members of the Seminole, Largo/Mid Pinellas, Tampa Bay Beaches, Gulfport, Pinellas Park and St. Petersburg chambers is planned for Sept. 23, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Lake Seminole Square, 8333 Seminole Blvd. The Seminole High School Jazz Ensemble will provide entertainment. Donations collected will help pay for the Seminole High band's trip to the 2005 Tournament of Roses parade. For information, call 391-0500, ext. 1286.

If you wear dentures, or if you are losing teeth, a dental information seminar today at 3:30 p.m. at the Seminole Library may be of interest. Dr. Richard Borgner will discuss dental implants and bone grafts, and explain several studies that defray some of the treatment expenses for qualifying participants. There will be a question-and-answer session at the end of the lecture. The library is at 9200 113th St. N. For information, call 535-6400.

The Seminole Aquatics Center will host Tot Time, a new program for young children and their parents, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon. Tot Time is free for children under 3 and costs $2 for adults. Participants must have a recreation card or be accompanied by a member. The Aquatics Center is at 9100 113th St. N. Call 397-6085.

The Seminole Recreation Walking Club on the Pinellas Trail, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 9 a.m. Each walk begins at Seminole City Park by the city hall flagpole. To register, call Dan at 391-8345.

Seminole Recreation Center's first fall luncheon, Sept. 21, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., followed by the Senior Matinee (The Bachelor, with Renee Zellweger and Chris O'Donnell) at 1:15 p.m. The So Long Summer luncheon costs $7 a person (no recreation card required) and includes a meal and entertainment by vocalist Frank Cannon. Saturday is the deadline for registration. The matinee is free to anyone with a recreation card and includes popcorn and a beverage.

Dr. Mark Hughes, from Sun Coast Hospital, will talk about wills and end of life issues during a free seminar today at 2 p.m. in Roskamp Auditorium at Freedom Square, 10801 Johnson Blvd. A discussion also will include such issues as long-term care, resuscitation status and prognosis of an illness and the importance of communicating a person's desires to family members and physicians. Refreshments will be provided. For reservations, call 398-0229.
