Will growing globalization mean shipping more Florida jobs overseas? Or will it mean the creation of new jobs as markets open up abroad? "Florida's Global Frontiers" will be the topic this week at a university-sponsored conference in Tampa.
Sessions will examine the impact of international trade and globalization on Florida's work force, environment and state and local policy.
"In recent years, the effect of globalization on Florida has been to increase employment in tourism and construction, and reduce it in manufacturing," said University of Florida economist David Denslow, who will be one of the speakers.
Keynote speakers will be J. Antonio Villamil, chief executive of the Washington Economics Group in Coral Gables, and Jagdish Bhagwati, a professor at Columbia University in New York.
Sponsors of the meeting, which begins Thursday evening, are the University of South Florida, the University of Florida, the University of Central Florida and Florida International University.
