The Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday canceled their home preseason schedule and the regular-season opener because of the NHL lockout that threatens to wipe out the season.
"Games will continue to be canceled on a similar basis until the league's labor dispute with the NHLPA has been resolved," team president Ken Sawyer said.
The San Jose Sharks also canceled their home preseason schedule and the first two regular-season home games.
Commissioner Gary Bettman told the 30 NHL teams that they can release building dates for games scheduled up to 30 days after Sept. 15, the day the lockout began. That 30-day cancellation period will be a rolling buffer, meaning games can be canceled each day the lockout continues.
The Lightning expects to make a similar announcement in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the NHL began laying off its employees, and said more than 100 members of its central staff of about 225 will have their jobs terminated.
DANTON CASE: Nineteen-year-old Katie Wolfmeyer was acquitted in East Saint Louis, Ill., of charges she helped former St. Louis Blues forward Mike Danton hire a hit man in a failed plot to kill his agent, David Frost.

GOLF: Europe's record victory over the U.S. team in the Ryder Cup helped produce the lowest final-day large-market ratings on NBC in the past three editions of the team event. Sunday's singles matches was watched in 3.4 percent of the homes in the top 56 U.S. media markets, according to Nielsen Media Research Inc, down 13 percent from major-market ratings for Europe's victory in 2002. ... Colin Montgomerie might try to become captain of the European team in 2006 if he doesn't qualify to play, his business manager said. Bernhard Langer said he likely will step down after his one-time stint as captain.
