Background checks block 1.6% of gun sales

WASHINGTON - About 1.6 percent of applications for gun purchases were rejected last year by the nation's background check system, according to new figures from the Justice Department.
The number of rejections was slightly below the 2002 level, the Bureau of Justice Statistics said in a report released last week.
The report said the top reason for rejections was a felony conviction or indictment.
Another common reason was a domestic violence misdemeanor conviction or a restraining order.
Overall, 126,000 of about 7.8-million applications for guns last year were blocked, the report said.
The National Instant Criminal Background Check System is run jointly by the FBI and state agencies. Background checks are required for purchases at all federally licensed gun dealers, but not at gun shows and some other venues.
