Kiwanis to host Halloween-themed fall festival

SEMINOLE - The 20th annual Fall Festival Days & Carnival, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, is scheduled for Oct. 23-24 at Seminole Vocational Education Center.

The Halloween-themed event will include a haunted house, costume contests, pumpkin painting, trick-or-treating, arts and crafts, and antique, classic and hot rod car shows.

A larger carnival area will feature hay rides and pony rides, live entertainment and a local business showcase.

Saturday's 10 a.m.-7 p.m. schedule will include the annual Barnyard Style Auction at 1 p.m. More than 150 items will be offered for bidding, including weekends on the beach, Disney World, Busch Gardens and Silver Springs, dozens of restaurant gift certificates and bicycles.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Seminole High School marching band's planned trip to the 2005 Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, Calif.

Admission and parking for the Fall Festival is free. Spaces in the business tent, car show and craft area are still available. Call Bill Miller at 393-3481 (evenings, 394-2582). The vocational center is at 12611 86th Ave. N.

The Seminole Community Library's Twilight Tales storytime program is scheduled to begin Monday, 6:30-7 p.m. The program is designed for children preschool through the second grade, and will include stories, songs and drama. Children may bring a favorite stuffed animal and wear slippers. The library is at 9200 113th St. N. Call the youth services department at 394-6913.

The Recreation Center is offering a tai chi class, which uses slow, rhythmic movements to improve breathing, relax the mind and body, strengthen the muscles and bones. The class requires no special conditioning, clothing or equipment. The class meets at 7:15 p.m. Tuesdays. All participants must have a Seminole Recreation card. Stop by the Recreation Center at 9100 113th St. N, or call 391-8345.

Upcoming senior programs at the Seminole Recreation Center include:

Discussion: Things Seniors Need to Know about Medicare and the Solvency of Social Security, 1-2 p.m. Wednesday. An AARP representative will talk about changes in Medicare, Social Security and voting tips. A recreation card is required.

Oktoberfest luncheon, Oct. 19. The event is catered by CLC, with entertainment by Happy Taps. The cost is $7 a person and no recreation card is needed. Participants must register by Oct. 16. Planes, Trains and Automobiles, with John Candy and Steve Martin, will be shown after the luncheon at 1:15 p.m. The movie is free with a recreation card. For more information, call Dan at 391-8345.

Checkpoint - The Palestinians After Oslo, a documentary by Tom Wright and Theresa Saliba, will be shown at the library at 7 p.m. today. Admission is free. The one-hour film takes a look at the Oslo agreement and its aftermath and features discussions by Palestinians and Israelis. The film is presented by Films For Justice In Palestine and Tampa Bay Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation. The library is at 9200 113th St. N. For more information, call 394-6905.

Thirty caregivers will be honored during the 2004 Caregiver Awards, 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Freedom Square, 10801 Johnson Blvd.

State Rep. Leslie Waters, R-Seminole, will be the master of ceremonies. Tickets are $15 in advance or at the door. For reservations, call Kirsten Robinson-Ireson at 398-0229.
