ST. PETERSBURG - Several hundred residents in St. Petersburg lost power Tuesday after an equipment malfunction lit up the night sky before 10 p.m., according to Progress Energy.
Spokeswoman Cherie Jacobs said the company had a problem with a one of its terminal poles, which is where underground power lines meet with overhead lines.
The malfunction had nothing to do with Hurricane Jeanne, Jacobs said, and workers wanted to have the power restored by 11 p.m.
The explosion may have looked like a "glowing orb," Jacobs said.
"We're not really sure what the cause is yet," Jacobs said.
