Swim coach coming back to Brandon

By Times Staff Writer
Published October 1, 2004

BRANDON - Swim coach Peter Banks is returning to the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center.

Banks, who has spent time as a national team coach for the United States, Ireland and Britain, coached in Brandon from 1989 to 2001. In August, one of his prize pupils, Maritza Correia, won a silver medal at the Athens Olympics. Gold medalist Brooke Bennett of Plant City is among the swimmers he taught. Banks left the club in 2001 to become director and coach at another club in Fort Lauderdale. Participation in the Brandon Blue Wave swim team dropped from more than 100 members during Banks' tenure to just 23 in 2002.

Aquatic Center officials do not yet know whether any of Banks' current swimmers will follow him to Brandon.
