University of Tampa to dedicate art studios

DOWNTOWN - The University of Tampa dedicates the R K Bailey Art Studios at 10 a.m. Saturday at 310 N Boulevard. Made possible by a donation from the Bailey Family Foundation, the studios will house the Fine Arts Studios, the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery and STUDIO-f.

The Scarfone/Hartley Gallery will feature Miriam Schapiro in Tampa, an exhibit of 20 works by the prominent feminist artist. As a visiting artist at UT, she will create monoprints in the studio through Oct. 15.

Schapiro is known for experimenting with various media and using new and traditional materials, such as lace, doilies, ribbon and floral fabrics. Her exhibit will be on display through Dec. 3.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

YMCA Wellness Center presents art auction

YBOR CITY - The Downtown YMCA Wellness Center hosts its ninth annual art auction, Y Art 4 Y Girls Rule, tonight at the Italian Club in Ybor City featuring the work of local artists.

The evening includes a live art auction, a silent auction and jazz entertainment.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the live auction begins at 8 p.m.

Tickets are available in advance at the Downtown YMCA for $50 each and include dinner and drinks. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Proceeds will benefit Y Girls Rule, part of the Ophelia Project of Tampa Bay, which is designed to address the developmental and emotional needs of adolescent girls.

Davis Island Yacht Club marks clubhouse opening

DAVIS ISLANDS - The Davis Island Yacht Club will celebrate the opening of its new clubhouse with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7 p.m. Oct. 22.

Construction for the clubhouse was delayed because of recent hurricanes, said Linda Rogers, the club's general manager.

The $1.2-million clubhouse will have two levels, with an open-air work space for members on the ground floor. The upper level will have 7,600 square feet of deck space with a surrounding bar, restaurant, offices and meeting rooms.

Education organization to host open house

TAMPA - Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, a national educational instruction and research organization, hosts an open house at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at its Tampa Learning Center, 701 S Howard Ave.

Consultants will speak on issues surrounding language and literacy development, including the symptoms of dyslexia, hyperlexia, attention deficit disorder and autism.

Staff members will also be present to answer questions and offer information about Lindamood-Bell's language and literacy programs for children and adults.

The event is open to the public. To reserve a space, call 253-0453.

Moonlight Garden Circle presents planters program

TAMPA - Learn the secrets of full sun and shade planters at the Moonlight Garden Circle's October program Tuesday featuring a local gardener from the garden store Bloom.

An informal garden talk begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by the program at 7. The event is free. Guests and new members are welcome.

The circle meets the first Tuesday of each month at the Tampa Garden Center, 2629 Bayshore Blvd.
