CLEARWATER - A 16-month-old child survived a 30-foot fall from a balcony at a Howard Johnson hotel early Sunday morning.

The child was treated by city paramedics before being flown by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center. The toddler was then transferred to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.

The child apparently slipped through the railing and fell about 30 feet to the ground, said police spokesman Wayne Shelor. The incident happened at 7:47 a.m. when the child and parents were watching the birds from the balcony.

The child's father is identified as Dennis Murray of Pennsylvania.

All Children's Hospital spokeswoman Cindy Rose said the family did not want any information released on the toddler's condition. A clerk at the Howard Johnson hotel, 325 S Gulfview Blvd., declined to comment.
