Thurman wins opener

Keith Thurman won his first fight at the National Police Athletic League Boxing Championships Monday, beating hometown favorite Damon Lassiter of Virginia Beach, Va., 30-8.

Thurman won his first fight ever in the 154-pound division, despite weighting only 145 for the bout. Thurman had to fight up in weight after the fighters at his usual weight either moved up or down.
