Breakin' it down

Each week this season, the Times breaks down the previous Friday's games and provides a statistical outlook. The breakdown for Week 4:

By Times staff writers
Published October 6, 2004

Robinson's Marcello Trigg passed for four touchdowns against Tampa Bay Tech, all in the first half of the Knights' 49-13 victory.

Three teams had more than 100 yards in penalties: St. Petersburg against Jesuit, Armwood against Leto, and Gaither against Sickles. Jesuit and Armwood won; Gaither lost in the final minute.

On Friday, 50 percent of winning teams had more penalty yards than their opponents. In 2003, 67 percent of winning teams did.

Derrick Hallback of Plant City scored three touchdowns and gained 186 of his 195 rushing yards in the second half of a 28-17 victory over Bloomingdale.

More teams are coming from behind this year. In 2003, teams ahead at the half won 91 percent of the time. A week ago, that number was 75 percent. Friday, it was only 66 percent.

Plant, King, and Gaither all had the first two scores of their games last Friday and lost. Gaither suffered that fate for a second successive week.

Middleton, Durant, and Sickles were the only teams in the county who had more turnovers than their opponents and still won.

Consistency: In its past two games, vs. Jefferson and Leto, Armwood (4-0) has averaged 8 yards a carry.

Tampa Bay Tech dropped 15 passes in its loss to Robinson.

Hillsborough had two 100-yard rushers, Jarred Fayson (114) and Stephen Knight (111), 18 first downs and more than 400 yards of total offense, but scored only 17 points in a victory over Chamberlain. The Terriers, in fact, had only nine points early in the fourth quarter.

Lakeland Evangel Christian spoiled the night for a crowd of 4,500 celebrating the opening of Newsome Stadium, beating the Wolves, 28-6.

East Bay had zero completions for the second straight game, both victories.

Robinson's Delbert Alvarado was 7-for-7 on extra points, remaining perfect on the season.

The only team to pass more than it ran (27 passes vs. 21 runs) and win was Middleton in a 21-18 victory over Plant.

Teams with more than 400 total yards were Jefferson with 495, Berkeley Prep with 431, and Gaither with 404. Jefferson and Berkeley Prep won; Gaither lost.
