TALLAHASSEE - Florida should accept the registrations of would-be voters who failed to check a little box on their registration forms, says the League of Women Voters.
"You shouldn't have to check boxes to have your registration seen as valid," said Kay Maxwell, national president of the league, who was in Florida Tuesday promoting a new campaign to help voters on election day.
The league says the top five risks to eligible voters this year are voter registration problems, erroneous purging of voter rolls, new requirements for identification, difficulties with new voting systems and problems with provisional ballots.
Voters are urged to remember five things on election day:
Don't panic if your name is not on the voter list; ask for help from a poll worker and if all else fails ask for a provisional ballot.
Go to the polls with proper identification - a driver's license, a paycheck, utility bill or government document that includes your name and address.
Look at signs and follow directions for using voting machines or filing a complaint.
If you encounter have a long wait, be patient; don't leave without voting.
Maxwell said the league also encourages early voting in states like Florida, where it is available beginning Oct. 18.
