HUDSON - Longtime coach Doreen Grote will coach the Hudson girls basketball team after three seasons away from the program, athletic director Linda McQuade said Wednesday.

Grote, 45, replaces Penny Gressick, who left last month to coach at Central. Grote will continue to teach physical education and coach tennis.

"I didn't want to leave the girls in a lurch," said Grote, who coached the girls junior varsity basketball team last season. "They're a good group of kids. I hope I can help them out."

Grote was over .500 in 10 seasons as Hudson's coach. Citing fatigue, she stepped down after the 2000-01 season, when she won her first district title.

"I thought, "This is what we've been working for,' " Grote said. "Let somebody else run with it for a while."

Gressick put together a 21-48 record in three seasons at Hudson, including 11-12 in 2001-02.

Hudson advertised the position, but Grote, hired by McQuade and principal Angie Stone, said she was the only real candidate.

"She's a good choice," McQuade said. "She has a lot of patience and she relates well to the players, and she has a human interest toward the players."
