A group of second- and third-graders at Mintz Elementary School in Seffner are teaming up with the Red Cross to collect goods to assist recent hurricane victims.
The Red Cross Safety Club, formed with about 20 students in early September, has spent the past month purchasing and collecting. They've collected hundreds of cans of food, bottles of shampoo, toothbrushes, clothes and other items.
"The kids at our school are bringing either things that they've gone out to purchase or things that they already have at home," said Lisa Moskowitz, a teacher at Mintz and the club's adviser.
Moskowitz asked anyone interested in assisting the relief effort to contact the Red Cross at 348-4820.
"If we can drum up some more local community support for some donations," she said, "that would be great."
School district looks for naming help
BRANDON - Hillsborough County schools need more help naming schools.
The district is soliciting names for a new adult technical center opening in the Sabal Park area in April 2005. Nominations from the public and business partners are encouraged.
School Board policy states that schools can be named for individuals who have a record of service to the nation or community, such as U.S. presidents, school board members, educators and outstanding citizens. Schools also may be named for geographic locations, groups or clubs.
Nominations for the technical school's name should be mailed in writing to Kenneth Adum, Area Director, Area VII District Office, 1005 N. Parsons Ave., Seffner, FL 33584.
