RIVERVIEW - One motorcyclist died and another was hospitalized after their bikes crashed into a pickup in a quiet Riverview neighborhood Wednesday evening.
Police say the pickup driver, Kenneth Earl Pearce, 49, was turning east from southbound Del Rio Drive onto McMullen Loop at about 5:05 p.m. Two motorcyclists, Robert Josef Reynolds, 33, and Joseph Allen Hughes, 48, were driving west on McMullen Loop and could not brake in time to avoid hitting the pickup.
Reynolds' motorcycle struck the front of the pickup, and he was thrown onto its hood and then to the road. Hughes' cycle slid to the ground and he was also thrown off. The bikers, Riverview neighbors, were taken to Tampa General Hospital, where Reynolds died and Hughes was in serious condition. Both were wearing helmets.
Pearce was uninjured. Investigators have not yet determined his speed or that of the bikers. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has not charged anyone involved in the accident and is investigating the incident.
