TAMPA - A man believed to be a hitchhiker was killed Friday when he walked into the path of a semitrailer truck at the interchange of Interstates 4 and 75.

The man's identity was not immediately released by the Florida Highway Patrol, which was attempting to locate his family. He was described as being 51 and from Mobile, Ala.

Troopers said the man was walking north on the ramp that connects northbound Interstate 75 to Interstate 4 at about 10:25 a.m. He was carrying a backpack and a cardboard sign that read "Texas."

The man walked from the edge of the roadway into the path of a Freightliner truck driven by William R. McKinnon, 49, of New Port Richey, and owned by RIA Corp. of Tampa. The truck swerved in an unsuccessful effort by McKinnon to avoid the man and hit the guardrail.
