TAMPA - Gulf overcame a 12-point, first-quarter deficit and two early turnovers to defeat Tampa Catholic 34-12.
Tampa Catholic took the lead when Raj Arasu went off tackle to the right and crossed back across the field en route to a 40-yard touchdown run. After a Gulf punt on its first possession, Arasu took a handoff on the ensuing play and scored a 79-yard touchdown. The senior had 142 yards rushing on four carries in the first quarter. He finished with 209 yards and two scores on 18 carries.
Gulf showed no signs of turning things around, fumbling on its next two drives, both inside Crusaders territory. Tampa Catholic was unable to capitalize, punting on both possessions.
The next minute and a half set the tone for the game.
After a Tampa Catholic punt, Gulf got on the scoreboard when quarterback Alton Voss scored from 1-yard out. That followed a 55-yard hookup from Voss to Daniel Montanez.
Voss showed his defensive ability two plays later when he intercepted a Joey Lauterea pass and returned it to the Crusaders' 34. Seven plays later, Voss hit Montanez for a 10-yard touchdown with 18 seconds left in the half, giving Gulf the lead for good.
Voss finished 12-of-17 for 162 yards. He scored a touchdown in the air and on the ground, and had no interceptions. Montanez had two receptions for 65 yards and a score.
