BROOKSVILLE - Being able to get first downs is essential in winning football games and Nature Coast (1-3) failed to gain any until late in the second quarter of a 49-14 loss to Cocoa Space Coast 49-14.

Matt Malone connected with Steve Kiebler for 54 yards in the third to give the Vipers a commanding 42-0 lead.

Malone was 8-15 for 168 and three touchdowns. Zach Kutch ran for 98 yards on 18 carries.

"Matt played well tonight," Vipers coach Bruce Bennett said. "He ran the offense very effectively."

Space Coast (2-1) outrushed Nature Coast 217 yards to 77 and held a 168-68 edge in passing yards.

"They had a huge lead but we didn't quit," Nature Coast coach Jaime Joyner said. "We have a lot of heart and it showed late in the game."

Their hearts showed as Robert Fleming ran from one end to the other on an 81-yard kickoff return to put the Sharks on the board.

The Sharks followed Fleming's return with a 6-play, 55-yard drive capped off by Mike Allen's 1-yard-run.

Space Coast erased any doubt when Kutch ran in a 42-yard-run, which put the Vipers up 49-14.
