MOUNT UNION WINS 99TH STRAIGHT

Zac Bruney was 17-of-24 for 229 yards and four touchdowns in host Mount Union's 99th consecutive regular-season victory, 49-7 over Wilmington (Ohio). The Purple Raiders haven't lost in the regular season since Oct. 15, 1994, 24-10 to Baldwin-Wallace. Last season, St. John's (Minn.) beat Mount Union 24-6 in the Division III national title game, ending an NCAA-record 55-game win streak.

OBSCURE GAME OF THE DAY

SPRINGFIELD (MASS.) 56, WESTERN CONN. 27: Quarterback Ryan Sylvia rushed for 197 yards and four touchdowns for the visiting Division III Pride. Among 84 plays from the wishbone, Springfield threw one pass, Sylvia's 38-yard touchdown to Mike Grendal in the fourth. This season, the Pride have rushed 284 times and passed 21.

PLAYERS OF THE DAY

KELLEN CLEMENS, OREGON: The junior was 36-of-55 for a career-high 437 yards and three touchdowns and ran for three scores in a 41-38 win over Washington State. His 13-yard touchdown run with 1:21 left was the winner.

SONNY CUMBIE, TEXAS TECH: These aren't your father's Cornhuskers. The senior threw for 436 yards and five touchdowns to hand Nebraska its worst loss ever, 70-10. In six games, Cumbie averages 420.2 passing yards.

OMAR JACOBS, BOWLING GREEN: The freshman completed 31 of 42 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-14 win over Central Michigan. He also led the Falcons with 75 yards on 11 carries.

ADRIAN PETERSON, OKLAHOMA: Five games, five 100-yard games for the freshman. Saturday, he gained 225 on 32 carries in a 12-0 win over Texas.

TIELOR ROBINSON, ARMY: The sophomore scored five touchdowns in a 48-29 win over Cincinnati that ended a 19-game losing streak. Robinson scored on runs of 1, 2 and 12 yards and receptions of 2 and 93 yards. He finished with 88 yards on 16 carries and 111 yards on four catches.

CONFERENCE OF THE DAY

MID-AMERICAN: After losing to Troy, Ohio State and Georgia by a combined 13 points, Marshall has taken command of the East division. It followed a 33-25 win over Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 29 with Saturday's 16-13 win at Ohio. With its next four against Kent State (1-5), Buffalo (1-5), Central Florida (0-5) and Akron (2-4), the Thundering Herd likely won't be tested until Nov.13 at Bowling Green.

NUMBER OF THE DAY

800: Wins for Notre Dame since it began playing in 1887 after beating Stanford 23-15. Only Michigan, with 838 after beating Minnesota 27-24, has more.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"This is the most disappointing loss of my life. We're probably the laughingstock of the nation." - Cincinnati quarterback Gino Guidugli on losing to Army.

ROAD TO PERFECTION

Only 14 of 117 I-A teams remain unbeaten. But a maximum of only nine can finish the season that way:

ACC - VIRGINIA AND MIAMI: Meet Nov.3 in Charlottesville.

BIG TEN - WISCONSIN AND PURDUE: Meet Saturday in West Lafayette.

BIG 12 - OKLAHOMA AND OKLAHOMA ST.: Meet Oct. 30 in Stillwater.

C-USA - SOUTHERN MISS AND LOUISVILLE: Don't meet; Golden Eagles' biggest tests come at Memphis (4-1) on Nov.12 and home to UAB (4-1) on Nov.27; the Cardinals' at Miami on Thursday and at Memphis on Nov.4.

MOUNTAIN WEST - UTAH: Biggest test comes at Wyoming (4-1) on Nov.13.

PAC-10 - USC AND ARIZONA ST.: Meet Saturday in Los Angeles.

SEC - AUBURN: Biggest tests, Arkansas (3-2) on Saturday and Georgia (4-1) on Nov.13, are at home.

WAC - BOISE ST.: Biggest tests, Fresno State (3-1 before Saturday's late game against UTEP) on Oct.23, and Louisiana Tech (3-3 with a win over Fresno State) on Nov.20, are at home.

INDEPENDENTS - NAVY: If the Midshipmen beat Notre Dame in East Rutherford, N.J., on Saturday, look out. They finish with Rice, Delaware, Tulane, Rutgers and Army (a combined 8-11 excluding I-AA Delaware at 4-1) with only Tulane on the road.
