Andrea Maria Castaneda of Clearwater was recently chosen to be a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. The society was founded to recognize outstanding academic achievement among high school students. Membership is by invitation only. Castaneda is a student at Largo High School.

Candace Braun, a senior at Tarpon Springs High School, is an achievement award winner in the National Council of Teachers of English writing contest. Only 689 nominees nationwide were chosen for the honor. The winners' essays will be compiled into a book that will be sent to 3,000 colleges.

Tarpon Springs Fundamental Elementary School took part in "Funds For Florida," a fundraiser put on by the students of the school multicultural committee, from Sept. 29 through Oct. 8. The students raised funds to help students in the Pensacola area. With the help of its school adviser, Carlos Melvin and its school safety officer, the Tarpon Springs Fundamental multicultural committee will adopt a public school in Pensacola.
