Fire station plans serious fun Sunday

SEMINOLE - City residents and visitors are invited to drop by the Seminole Fire and Rescue Department's Fire Prevention 2004 Open House on Sunday.

The event marks National Fire Prevention Week and the National Fire Protection Association's monthlong campaign to remind children and adults about fire safety. This year's theme, "Test Your Smoke Alarms," highlights the importance for families to install and maintain smoke alarms.

There will be information as well as fun: chats with firefighters, fire engine rides, interactive games, free food, clowns, door prizes and giveaways.

The open house will be held from noon until 3 p.m. at the main fire station at 11195 70th Ave. N. For more information, contact Alison McCarty at 393-8711.

The final Music in the Park concert will feature blues music by T.C. Carr and Friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Seminole City Park, 7464 Ridge Road.

Residents should bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food and beverages will be available for sale. Alcoholic beverages and glass containers are not permitted.

The University of South Florida Suncoast Gerontology Center will sponsor "Alzheimer's Disease: What Caregivers Need to Know" from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Freedom Square, 7800 Liberty Lane.

The community program is designed for people caring for a family member who has Alzheimer's. It will enlighten them about the disease process, research opportunities and communication strategies.

The program is free, but reservations are required. Lunch is included. Respite is available at no charge on a space-available basis and must be confirmed in advance.

The Kiwanis Club of Seminole is looking for "crafters" to show their wares at an arts and crafts show during its 20th Annual Fall Festival Oct. 23 and 24 at the Seminole Vocational Education Center, 12611 86th Ave. N.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 23 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 24 and will include live entertainment, a barnyard-style auction, food and Halloween-themed events. Call 393-3481.

The Seminole High School Class of 1974 will hold its 30th reunion Oct. 29 and 30.

Among the more than 125 people expected for the event are former classmates from New York, North Carolina and Nevada.

The alumni will attend the Seminole High School Homecoming Football Game and bring-your-own tailgate barbecue Oct. 29, and meet for drinks at the Hilton, 17120 Gulf Blvd., North Redington Beach, after the game.

On Oct. 30, they will gather at Gators, 12754 Kingfish Blvd., Treasure Island, for "heavy hors d'oeuvres" and a cash bar at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $30 per person at the door.

St. Anne of Grace Church Octoberfest will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The event will include German music and food, cold drinks and hot dogs, pony rides, two moon walks, a petting zoo, a dunk tank and games. Admission is free. The church is at 6650 113th St. N. The Kiwanis Club of Seminole recently received 11 awards at the annual Florida District convention:

First place for K-Kids, chairwoman Jeanine Blauvelt; first place, Builders Club, chairman Scott Rose; first place, Horses and Handicap, Bob Maus; first place, Every Child a Swimmer, chairman Jim Lashbrook; first place, Youth Services, chairman John Healey; first place, Community Service, chairwoman Jeanine Blauvelt; honorable mention, Human and Spiritual Values, chair Del Dunn; honorable mention, International Understanding, chairman Reed Franz; honorable mention, Interclub, chairman Don Levy; administrative award, secretary Bob Grant; and a special award to Trish Springer for Young Children Priority One.

Kiwanis meets at the Roskamp auditorium at Freedom Square on at 6:15 p.m. Thursdays.
